Our History
St. Luke's Shelter is an integrated auxiliary of St. Luke's United Methodist Church. The Shelter opened in 1991 as an alliance of St. Luke's UMC, local activists, and citizens of Glover Park that was determined to provide a community-run alternative to the large emergency shelter proposed for the neighborhood by DC government.
Today, the organization provides transitional and emergency shelter to homeless men living in upper NW Washington, and job readiness and culinary arts training to homeless and at risk women and men from across the District. Shelter referral and case management partners are the Community Council for the Homeless at Friendship Place, Georgetown Ministry Center, and Miriam's Kitchen. Our partner for implementing the hypothermia shelter is Catholic Charities. Our partner for the 2005 Next Step Kitchen program is DC Central Kitchen. The Shelter receives program support and food donations from a committed corps of neighbors composed of individuals, faith groups, and restaurants.
